Hello everyone,
I just got back from walking the floor at OMR in Hamburg, Europe’s leading festival for the digital and marketing scene – and I’m still processing. The noise, the energy, the thousands of people building, learning, connecting. You know what stood out the most? How generous this industry is.
I spoke with reps from HubSpot, Klaviyo, Tourstream. I caught up with creators and founder friends – people who should technically be “competition.” But no one was acting like that. They were sharing insights. Giving feedback. Telling me what’s really working for them right now. Not in a braggy way. Not in a “we’re crushing it” kind of way. But in a helpful way. And then I met Rolf Hermann from OMR Education – shoutout to him. And he said something that hit me like lightning:
“Marketing is the best industry in the world… because there are no gatekeepers for knowledge.”
Boom. That’s it.
Yes, maybe there are gatekeepers when it comes to budget or decision-making hierarchies. But when it comes to know-how? To tactics? To ideas? This world is open source. In marketing, we’re not hoarding secrets. We’re not locking away “the formula.” We’re putting it on LinkedIn. We’re recording a podcast about it. We’re giving the deck away at our talk. You don’t see that in every industry. Imagine two mechanical engineers swapping machine schematics. Not gonna happen. But in our world? People care. People share. We’re all trying to build something better – together. So instead of complaining about the “Bronze” we’re stuck in, maybe it’s time to appreciate the fact that we’re even in the arena. Surrounded by curious, generous minds. Working in a space where the answers are out there – and the only barrier is whether you’re willing to learn.
I’m grateful to be in this industry. And I’m grateful to be building it with people like you.
